Corten steel a weathering steel, a copper chromium alloy steel also called Cor-Ten steel available is 2 types ISRM 41 Corten A (Designation A242) & Corten B (ASTM A588 & A606 for thin sheet) when exposed to the atmosphere, develop a thin layer of oxide, known as 'patina' over the steel surface. This patina acts in the form of a protective upper film that resists corrosion & provides tensile strength but is not rust-proof. Hence it eliminates the need for painting. This steel alloy is widely used in landscaping, broadcasting towers, leeds, structure, bridge, marine transportation, inter-modal containers, railway carriage, visible sheet piling, gas flue, architectural sculptures and other outdoor applications because it forms a protective layer of rust after approximately six months of exposure to moisture and oxygen.
